A Three-Part AI Series for Lutheran Principals in 2026

Building on recent work with schools to reduce digital noise and restore focus, this three-part webinar series will give Principals an update on the simple, practical ways AI can support wellbeing, clarity and everyday school life.

Across these one-hour sessions, we will revisit what is emerging in schools, including new automation tools that help create healthy boundaries during lessons and after hours. We will also explore what these trends mean for leadership, staff expectations and future planning. Each session will prompt deeper thinking and offer clear steps forward.

SESSION 1: AI 101 for Principals: Clarity and Confidence – Start with the essentials. This session gives Principals a clear foundation for understanding AI and its role.

Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, Implementing whole-school approaches to supporting students' social-emotional learning and mental health (2024)

Michael is one of Australia's highest profile psychologists working in all forms of media. A successful author, speaker, broadcaster and mental health advocate, Michael works in private practice in Melbourne. Michael has been the recipient of a number of awards including the Australian Jaycees Outstanding Young Australian of the Year (1987), the New Zealand Commemoration Medal for Services to the Community (1990), and named Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International in recognition of his work in the prevention of youth suicide (1997) and again in 2021.

Michael’s main interests lie in the area of parent information and Grand Parenting. He continues to offer his trademark talks to parents and students on ‘How to Build Happy and Resilient Children, Surviving Year 7 and Surviving Year 12’, but he also works closely with schools on implementing mental health strategies for principals to prioritise self-care and manage stress in their demanding roles.

Michael McQueen, Author and Futurist (2022)

Michael provided an update on the recent technology-trends, including a number of new developments in the use of Virtual Reality in the classroom, as well as technology designed to support early years learning and development. A summary of research around the demise of discernment in students was shared and what this means in terms of inquiry-based learning. He examined the theme of how to foster originality and creativity in students, as a key to future-proofing capability. Michael provokes deeper thinking regarding how to drive innovation in an educational setting, re-visiting three simple, yet important questions: what do we need to STOP doing, what must we NEVER stop doing, what should we start doing AGAIN.

Dr Toby Ford, Health and Wellbeing Principles for Principals that have risen during COVID (2021)

Dr Ford referenced the work of Riley and Marsh et al, authors of the formative longitudinal study of principal OHS and Wellbeing. Referring to a successful intervention his organization has deployed in both primary and secondary settings to demonstrate the unique nature of principalship. As a form of leadership experience, the role has health wellbeing and resilience similarities to other commercial workplaces as well as unique features only seen in education settings.

Dr Tom Nehny, Understanding and Overcoming Anxiety (2020)

This interactive webinar demystified the most common psychological problem - anxiety. Including powerful self-reflection exercises, participants learnt:

  • A clear understanding of what anxiety is, where it comes from, and what to do about it
  • The distinction between 'normal' and 'clinical' anxious states
  • 5 things everybody needs to know about anxiety
  • The 'Great Mistake' (the most common obstacle that impedes a robust psychology)
  • How 2 core ingredients can overcome anxiety in any individual
  • The fundamental link between overcoming anxiety and building confidence
